I am based in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and have had Devon Rexes for many years. I spent several years in the early 80's being mentored by Kiks Thorn (Kistyana), Victoria Hay (Belmanoir) and Pat Turner (Scintillia).
I had an break from 1988 till 1999 when I had planned to start to breed Devon's, sadly my girl (Mouse) had a few problems and had to be spayed. I then put the idea on hold until I saw a LaPerm and decided I really wanted to breed this delightful cat. I had planned on having just the one and in July 2004 Quincunx Loopylocks Lulu joined our household.
I started to show her and thought one was not enough so in January 2005 Ballego Izzabella Blue came to live with us. My aim now is to progress my family with the girls that stayed to develop the WAKANDA line, whilst expanding the gene pool and breeding healthy happy kittens. I have also introduced a new breed into our home - Whispa a beautiful Tonkinese kitten.
Our home is full of characters, we currently have, in age order:
Our handsome 12 year old Labrador Gun dog was re-homed with us when he was 4. He is a fully trained Gundog and was at the time living out with another dog and desperately wanted to be a family pet. When he came to us he was given an extremely hard time by one of our Great Danes Taz (sadly now over the rainbow), who wanted to eat him. Within a short-time the two became firm friends. Boo Bear is still a little nervous and a bit of a whoos when it comes to new situations and all manner of household objects but is a wonderful loving dog who loves nothing better then a kiss and a cuddle. He adores kittens and is frequently seen being gooey eyed over furry babies.
Lulu is a 4 year old LaPerm girl who was a complete tomboy as kitten. As she has matured she has become very regal in her ways, always sitting on the highest point of the activity centres, ejecting dogs from their baskets, choosing where she will sit and refusing to move. Lu sleeps at the end of our bed each night keeping a watchful eye on both her parents and pet siblings; any movement will have her standing on your chest cooing, paddling for attention or thrusting her face against yours - after all she is a princess who deserves attention. Lu also has her own food preferences, some say she is spoilt but we prefer to say she has a delicate palate and only Almo chicken with Pumpkin will do.
A handsome Merle Great Dane who is 4years old. The Bobster or 'Billiam' as he is also known is a hyperactive lad who is somewhat short of hearing, although he does frequently hear more then he lets on. We knew he was going to be trouble when he arrived, most puppies play for 20 minutes and sleep for 2 hours - he slept for 20 minutes and played for 2 hours!
He is gradually settling down now and the periods of mad charging around are getting less and less apart from when visitors come when he gets over excited. He loves his cats particularly the LaPerm girls who love nothing better then to tease him. He is often removed from his basket by Lu or found lying on our bed with Ratious. Although he may be the naughtiest dog in history he is a lovely boy, with no sides to him, he welcomes all to the house including Pugs!
Quinta is Billy-Bob's sister and is a 4 1/2 year old Harlequin Great Dane and a real poppet. She has the most wonderful markings with lovely black stockings on her front legs. She is an intelligent girl and quickly proved herself to be the model of good behaviour (look and learn Billy-Bob), sweet natured and a real Mummy's girl. Together we spend many a happy moment playing pogo sticks, how close can you get, lets catch the spindles and Mummy needs kisses.
An extra special thanks also go to Maggie at Hazel Tree House Kennels for giving us the opportunity to have not one but two wonderful Cheney Danes. I would highly recommend Hazel Tree House to anyone looking for boarding for their beloveds, cats' or dogs' or in fact finding that extra special Great Dane puppy.
Nitika
One of our first Wakanda LaPerms, born March 2006. Nitika is one of Lulu's beautiful kittens, she is a Blue, Silver Shaded and White longhair LaPerm. She is also known as 'Little Miss Bugger Pants' a name she was given at 3 weeks of age when she started to show her natural talent for naughtiness. She was the first kitten to escape from her birthing pen, the first to climb out of the kitten play-pen and the first do all things naughty. She is a total sweetie and loves to snuggle up with the dogs and me.
Whispa
Amorcatz Ellen Macartha aka Whispa, is a delightful Blue Tonkinese who had her first litter last year. She is a total sweetie and incredibly laid back. She is little Miss Purra Lotta and loves to be kissed and cuddled, her favourite game at the moment is hunting for bed mice which has to be played at night and whilst we are trying to sleep! With her first litter she proved herself to also be a wonderful mum.
Harriet
Harriet is a beautiful LaPerm girl who has exceeded my expectations on the show bench where she entertains all that come to see her. She has a distinctive red flash on her head - hence the name and was born on the day the last book came out. Harriet decided at the grand old age of 3 weeks that she was staying and is a wonderful addition to our family. Harriet loves to be carried and will come and tap you on the arm to let you know she is waiting to be picked up and even if you are bust she is hard to refuse.
Sirius
Sirius (of the Harry Potter litter) is an outgoing boy with a very soft nature, he loves to be cuddled and kissed. As one of our stud boys it was a hard day when he went to live in his stud-run, I was worried he would hate it and was continually watching him for any signs of distress. Sirius well he just loved it and quickly showed me that he was having a great time climbing the run, playing on the ladder and sitting out on the rain, a passion he shares with Ivo!!
Ivo
Ivo is a sensitive LaPerm lad that joined us in January 2008, he took a little while to settle in but once he was housed in his stud-run really came into his own. He loves sitting in the rain and lazing in his house when it is sunny (don't ask why). He is also a very talkative boy liking to express his opinions on the birds, latest weather conditions and what he thinks of his food.
Teardrop
Teardrop or Tiggee Beebee as I call her a shorthair LaPerm is a snugly bugly girl always purring with a happy go lucky outlook on life. She came down from Scotland and was not phased by either the journey or her new home and settled in very quickly. She took to her photo-shoot for Hills Science like a seasoned pro and at her first TICA show made history by becoming the first UK LaPerm Champion, once Sirius decides to work we expect some beautiful babies.
Baby Bo
Baby Bo as I call her is a scrumptious Brown spotted Devon Rex, she is a loving little minx who from the moment she arrived home walked in and announced to everybody - hey I'm here lets get playing. She adores Tinks and the two are the best of friends. She has been shown a few times and proved herself to not be phased by anything and to demand that people take notice of her. She is a Devon with attitude but in just the right amount.
Monster
Daughter to Whispa we knew she had to stay when at 4 weeks she started to greet us when we went into the kitten room and purred as soon as you looked at her. Her pedigree name is Wakanda Goodie Blushooz, however she grew into her pet name Monster when she decided that having her claws clipped was a no no and started to moan and whinge if she didn't want to something. However she is a real sweetie and is doing well on the show bench having already received a Best Of Breed in her kitten open class.
Teeny Weenie Devon Nee-Nee
Teeny Weenie Devon Nee-Nee is a stunning Seal DKP Devon Rex, she is best friends with Monster and the two are never far apart. She is an amazing little girl with a real presence and amazing confidence for a kitten. She has so far in two shows received; Best Of Breed in her kitten open class twice, had a red card day winning every side class and also Best Foreign Kitten at the Bedford show.
